Quechup stain kills blogger’s Gmail access
Luckily, I only had about 200 or so e-mail contacts get spammed by the whole Quechup fiasco. But what if I had about 1,000, like blogger Matt Staggs?
Matt wrote on his blog that he’d fallen for the address book scam too:
Little did I know, the damned thing spammed every single contact I had, from work associates, to friends, to relatives, to even people I don’t recall ever meeting. Every single one of them received an invite supposedly from me to join this service.
Now - at 8:50 p.m. at night - I find myself sending apology notes and warnings to the near 1,000 individuals I have in my address book. Very professional looking. Very smooth.

Now, with the massive dispatches of e-mail Matt’s sent, plus the apology letters, GMail has blocked his account, probably thinking he’s a spammer … just like Quechup is!!!

This is an automated response by Gmail because it can only assume that I am spamming people because I sent out so many emails at once. The irony is killing me. As part of this suspension, I am also forbidden from setting an automated response message on my account, or forwarding email to another account.
I am hoping that my suspension won’t last long, and my attempts to reach anyone at Google have been utterly fruitless.
Google should have declared Quechup mail spam by now, network-wide … I’m still getting about 10 invites a day. Maybe Google isn’t responding to this quickly becuase I’ve only seen a few notes about this site hit the mainstream tech news, mostly from Pete Cashmore, BlogNation, and Sam Harrelson.
Maybe it’ll take a network news story to get this Quechup issue quelched…
