Inside China’s DMV: their driving test
Could you drive a car in China? Let’s find out by taking the People’s Republic DMV driving test…
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Peter Leo told of China’s wacky test for drivers in his Morning File blog today, which has many questions about courtesy, instead of focusing on competence. (This from a report in the Christian Science Monitor and parts of a 2004 NY Times story.)
Below are some sample questions from the 600-question booklet at the Beijing Motor Vehicle Administration. The test contains 100 randomly-selected questions from the booklet, and test-takers must get 90 percent correct to pass.
This in a country where 104,000 people died in traffic-related fatalities in 2003 … 250% more than the USA, in a country with much less cars.
Question 1:
What should a driver do when he needs to spit while driving?
A. Spit through the window.
B. Spit into a piece of waste paper, then put it into a garbage can.
C. Spit on the floor of the vehicle.

Drivers should:
A. Deliberately underestimate each other.
B. Compete for road supremacy.
C. Learn and help each other, adopt one’s strong point while overcoming one’s weak point and keep safely driving.
Question 3:
What you should do if you come across an accident where someone needs help?
A. Drive past.
B. Slow down.
C. Stop to offer some assistance and call the police
D. Negotiate with party concerned if some reward is available.
Question 4:
If you come upon an auto accident and find a motorist lying unconscious on the road, should you shake that person violently to wake him up?
A. Yes
B. No
Question 5:
If you come upon an accident and find a motorist lying unconscious on the road, and if that person’s internal organs are also lying on the road, should you pick up the organs and put them back inside the person?
A. Yes
B. No

I wonder if they put those on the Chinese version of the test at the DMV.
they constantly deliberately underestimate each other THEN compete for road supremacy here in dubai (most drivers indians/pakistanis/bangladeshis). apparently roads don’t get much different halfway across the world.
Hey that driving isn’t at all crazy for India! You should see what Bangalore traffic looks like. 7 ‘lanes’ of traffic in 3 marked lanes
And in those ‘7′ lanes you may get 20 motorbikes across. Oh and throw in a cow and a hand cart carrying a tonne of steel tubing for good measure. And someone knocking on your door trying to sell you something, while the cop at the lights strokes his mustache and waits for his next tip…
I saw that… A christian science monitor story today talked about the cows in India, and how the views of them wandering city streets is getting old for city reisdents. They want the cows gone, but can’t since they are holy.
